Excellent way to explain it! I might steal a couple of sentences from there, it's really a very clear way to put it.

I love twitter because it's a great way to create a community around my website (i'm @arttrav, in case you're interested).

When i have to define twitter to people, i say that it is like sending a public text message. In 140 chars you send that message (through your selected device) to a public service that anyone can search; there are people who "follow" your feed like your friends on facebook do, but that the relationship is often less strong and more unilateral.

Short enough for you? ;-)!

@bonnyface
I think most people will understand it as "one of those Internet things" still.
And yeah, no controversy, it must have been a bad day! I have something though: it bothers me when people call it the "Miracle" on the Hudson. How about the "Very Skilled Pilot" on the Hudson? Ok, maybe that's something for another post... :)

@Bryan
You might want to try tweet deck: it lets you create multiple Twitter windows with different settings.

I'm loving twitter. I just wish there was a way to sort out close friends from the more talkative but interesting people you follow. If they dont "@" me I might miss it, and I only follow about 100 people! How do they "big guns" keep track of anything?

Oh Patrick, nothing controversial here. Are you feeling well?

Twitter has really been in the spotlight in some of the news-making events lately. Both the terrorism in India and the Miracle on the Hudson come to mind. I'm not sure Twitter is cutting edge anymore when a TwitPic is posted by CNN. But I love Twitter anyway!
